About Ampco Pumps
Ampco Pumps Centrifugal & Sanitary PumpsKrones Group
Ampco Pumps traces its origin to 1914, when AMPCO Metal was founded on the discovery of a durable nickel-aluminum bronze alloy suited to demanding military and marine applications. In 1948, the company launched a dedicated pumps division focused on industrial centrifugal pumps built for saltwater environments, supplying the U.S. Navy with its first Z, K, and R Series pumps.
Nearly 75 years after those first bronze pump series, Ampco Pumps expanded its engineering into six distinct series of marine and industrial centrifugal pumps: the ZC2, K, R, IC+, D, and ZCM metric-sized series, each targeting different flow, pressure, and material requirements. The company eventually spun off as its own standalone pump business, separate from the original AMPCO Metal alloy operation.
In 1995, Ampco Pumps expanded into sanitary pumps, opening up rapid growth across food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and biotech markets that demand hygienic, easily cleanable pump designs. In 2023, Ampco Pumps became a member of the Krones Group, and today the company manufactures both centrifugal and positive displacement pumps backed by more than 70 years of dedicated pump manufacturing experience. ChatMRO helps plant engineers match pump series, flow rate, and material of construction against the Ampco catalog, and our team supports RFQ submissions for single-pump or plant-wide replacement orders.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Ampco's marine/industrial pumps and its sanitary pump line?
The marine and industrial centrifugal pump series (Z, K, R, IC+, D, and ZCM) are built from nickel-aluminum bronze for saltwater and general industrial service, while the sanitary pump line added in 1995 uses hygienic, easily cleanable designs suited to food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and biotech production. Choose based on whether your application needs corrosion resistance or sanitary cleanability.
What does the ZCM designation mean in Ampco's pump lineup?
ZCM refers to Ampco's metric-sized centrifugal pump series, built to metric dimensional standards rather than the imperial sizing used in the company's other series. This is relevant for facilities using metric piping and flange standards, common outside North America.
Why were Ampco's original pumps made from nickel-aluminum bronze?
The alloy was discovered as part of AMPCO Metal's founding in 1914 and proved highly durable in demanding military and marine saltwater applications, which is why Ampco's first Z, K, and R Series pumps supplied to the U.S. Navy were built from it. That bronze alloy heritage remains central to the company's marine and industrial pump lines today.
Is Ampco Pumps still independently operated?
Ampco Pumps became a member of the Krones Group in 2023, joining a larger organization while continuing to manufacture its established centrifugal and positive displacement pump lines. The company's pump engineering and manufacturing heritage dates back more than 70 years.
How do I find the right Ampco pump without an exact model number?
Describe the pump series if known, required flow rate and pressure, and whether your application is marine, general industrial, or sanitary, and ChatMRO's AI will match it against the indexed Ampco catalog. This is especially useful when replacing a pump in an older installation without current documentation.
