What Is a Limit Switch Head?
A limit switch head is the mechanical actuator assembly that mounts onto a limit switch body and converts physical motion — a cam passing by, a door closing, a cylinder reaching end of stroke — into the internal contact movement that switches the electrical circuit. Heads are modular and interchangeable within a compatible switch body family, letting one base switch body be configured with a roller lever for rotary cam actuation, a plunger for straight-line contact, or a rotary head for multi-direction sensing, without replacing the entire switch.
Selecting a head requires matching two things: the mounting pattern and thread/bolt circle of the specific switch body series (heads are not universal across manufacturers or even across a manufacturer's different switch body lines), and the actuation geometry needed for the application — arm length and roller diameter for roller lever heads, stroke and pretravel for plunger heads, and number of switching directions for rotary heads. Using a head with insufficient overtravel for the actual mechanical stroke is a common cause of premature limit switch failure.

Can I use any limit switch head with any switch body?
No. Limit switch heads are designed to mount to a specific switch body family's bolt pattern and internal actuation mechanism — heads from one manufacturer's series generally will not fit or properly actuate a different manufacturer's switch body, and even within one manufacturer, different switch body lines can use different head mounting patterns. Always match the head to the exact switch body series it will be installed on.
What's the difference between a roller lever head and a plunger head?
A roller lever head has an arm with a roller at the end that a cam or moving part rolls against, converting rotary or angled motion into switch actuation — common where a rotating cam or angled approach triggers the switch. A plunger head actuates with straight-line, direct contact pressure on a pin or button, suited to applications where the actuating part approaches the switch head-on rather than at an angle.
Why does overtravel matter when selecting a limit switch head?
Overtravel is the additional distance the actuator can move past the switch point without damaging the mechanism. If the actual mechanical motion driving the head exceeds its rated overtravel, the switch's internal mechanism can be overstressed and fail prematurely — always check the actual stroke or travel distance of your application against the head and switch body's rated overtravel, not just its nominal switch point.
Are rotary limit switch heads adjustable for multiple directions?
Yes, many rotary heads can be actuated from multiple directions (commonly 2 or 4) and some allow the switch point and direction sensitivity to be field-adjusted, which is useful where a single switch needs to detect motion or position from more than one approach angle, such as a crane bridge that can travel either direction along its rail.
Can limit switch heads be replaced without replacing the whole switch?
In most cases, yes — that's the main advantage of the modular head/body design. If a roller lever arm is bent or a plunger boot is worn, the head assembly can typically be unbolted and replaced on its own, provided the replacement head matches the switch body's exact mounting series, without needing to rewire or replace the entire switch and its enclosure.
