What Is a Capacitor Tester?
A capacitor tester measures one or more electrical properties of a capacitor — capacitance value, equivalent series resistance (ESR), and leakage current — to determine whether it's within its rated specification or has degraded. Capacitance-only testing is often insufficient to catch a failing electrolytic capacitor, because aging electrolytics frequently develop high ESR (indicating a dried-out or degraded electrolyte) while still measuring close to their rated capacitance value, which is why ESR meters are considered essential for reliable troubleshooting of power supplies and switch-mode circuits.
In-circuit ESR meters can test many electrolytic capacitors without desoldering them from the board, because ESR readings are far less affected by parallel components than a capacitance reading would be — this makes ESR testing the standard first-pass diagnostic for power supply and monitor repair. Leakage current testing, typically requiring the capacitor to be tested out-of-circuit at or near its rated voltage, catches a different failure mode: a capacitor that reads correct capacitance and ESR but draws excessive leakage current under actual operating voltage.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement Type | Capacitance, ESR, leakage current | ESR catches degraded electrolytics that a capacitance-only test misses |
| In-Circuit Capability | In-circuit ESR vs. out-of-circuit only | In-circuit testing avoids desoldering during troubleshooting |
| Capacitance Range | pF to tens of thousands of µF | Must cover the range of capacitor values being tested |
| Test Voltage | For leakage testing, near the capacitor's rated voltage | Leakage current is voltage-dependent — must test near actual operating voltage to be meaningful |
| Discharge Safety Function | Automatic capacitor discharge before/after test | Protects the operator and the meter from residual charge in large capacitors |

FAQ
Capacitor Testers Questions, Answered
Why isn't a capacitance reading enough to tell if a capacitor is bad?
Aging electrolytic capacitors commonly develop high equivalent series resistance (ESR) as their electrolyte dries out, while their measured capacitance value can remain close to the rated spec — a capacitance-only test will pass a capacitor that's actually failing in circuit. This is why ESR measurement is considered the more reliable diagnostic for electrolytic capacitor health in power supply and switching circuit troubleshooting.
Can I test a capacitor without removing it from the circuit board?
In-circuit ESR meters can test many electrolytic capacitors directly on the board because ESR readings are much less affected by parallel components (like resistors or other capacitors) than a capacitance measurement would be. Leakage current testing generally requires removing the capacitor and testing it out-of-circuit near its rated voltage, since in-circuit leakage paths would corrupt the reading.
What is leakage current testing and when do I need it?
Leakage current testing applies close to the capacitor's rated voltage and measures the small current that leaks through the dielectric — a capacitor with excessive leakage can fail in ways that a capacitance or ESR reading alone won't reveal, particularly relevant in high-reliability and high-voltage applications. It's most useful when troubleshooting intermittent or voltage-dependent failures that basic ESR and capacitance testing don't explain.
What ESR value is considered too high for a capacitor?
Acceptable ESR depends on the capacitor's capacitance value, voltage rating, and application — most ESR meters and reference charts provide expected ESR ranges by capacitance and voltage rating, and a reading significantly above that range indicates degradation. There's no single universal 'too high' number; compare the reading against the capacitor's specific rated range rather than a flat threshold.
Why does a capacitor tester need an automatic discharge function?
Large capacitors, especially those pulled from power supplies or motor circuits, can retain a dangerous stored charge even after power is removed — an automatic discharge function protects the operator from shock and protects the meter's input circuitry from damage before a measurement begins. This is a standard safety feature on quality capacitor and ESR testers, not an optional convenience.
