A lever chain hoist (also called a come-along or chain puller) is a compact, hand-operated hoisting device that uses a ratcheting lever mechanism to pull a load chain through a gear train, letting a single operator lift, lower, or horizontally pull loads with mechanical advantage far exceeding raw arm strength. A Weston-type load brake automatically engages while the load is being lowered, holding it in place the moment the lever is released and preventing uncontrolled freefall — a critical safety feature distinguishing it from a simple block and tackle.
Construction crews, riggers, and industrial maintenance teams rely on lever chain hoists wherever a load needs to be lifted, lowered, or pulled horizontally in a location without fixed overhead power — equipment installation, alignment work, tensioning, and general job site material positioning are common applications. Their free-chaining mechanism lets the operator quickly pull slack chain through by hand to connect to a load before engaging the lever mechanism, and enclosed chain guide rollers with a chain stripper keep the load chain feeding smoothly through the hoist body during operation.
Common configuration: load capacities from roughly 1,500 lb to 6 tons (12,000 lb) across the Dayton lineup, hoist lift lengths from 5 ft to 20 ft (chain length typically slightly longer than rated lift), hook openings from 29/32" to 1-7/64" depending on capacity, pull-to-lift-rated-load force of roughly 46-50 lb regardless of load capacity (higher-capacity models achieve this through additional gear reduction rather than requiring more hand force), forged steel hooks with safety latches, all-steel frame/gear case/cover construction, alloy steel (Grade 80/100) load chain, and compliance with ANSI/ASME B30.21 and EN13157 standards.
