About Furon

About Furon

Furon was founded by George Angle in 1955 under the name The Fluorocarbon Company, initially producing DuPont's Teflon, or polytetrafluoroethylene, primarily for nonstick cookware coatings before the business expanded into industrial sealing applications. The company developed Teflon spring-energized seals to handle the extreme temperatures and forces found in commercial aircraft, establishing a technical foundation in high-performance sealing that would define its later growth.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, the company, still operating as The Fluorocarbon Company, acquired Omniseal designs and manufacturing firms, continuing to refine spring-energized seal technology for demanding aerospace sealing requirements. By 1991, the renamed Furon organized its business into segments spanning Engineered Products, Fluoropolymers, Fluid Sealing, Extrusion Technologies, and Furon Europe, and built a portfolio of specialty brands including CHR, Dekoron, Felsted, Fluorglas, Medex, Meldin, Omniseal, Rulon, Synflex, and Unitherm.

Compagnie de Saint-Gobain acquired Furon in 1999, giving the French industrial group a leading position in high-performance plastics and sealing. In 2021, Saint-Gobain rebranded its seals business as Omniseal Solutions, combining decades of Furon's polymer seal, bearing, and composite expertise under one name, and Furon-originated products such as Rulon and Omniseal continue to be manufactured under this successor brand.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Furon spring-energized seal?

Furon's spring-energized seals combine a PTFE jacket with an internal spring to maintain sealing force across extreme temperatures and pressures, originally developed for commercial aircraft applications. Tell us your operating temperature and pressure range and we'll match the right seal design.

What brands originated from Furon?

Furon developed and owned several specialty brands including CHR, Dekoron, Felsted, Fluorglas, Medex, Meldin, Omniseal, Rulon, Synflex, and Unitherm, covering different fluoropolymer and sealing product categories. Let us know which legacy brand or part number you're trying to match and we'll confirm the current equivalent.

Is Furon still an active brand name?

Furon's business was acquired by Compagnie de Saint-Gobain in 1999, and in 2021 Saint-Gobain rebranded the seals portion of that business as Omniseal Solutions. Products originally developed under Furon, such as Rulon and Omniseal, continue to be manufactured under this successor organization.

What is Rulon material used for?

Rulon is a PTFE-filled fluoropolymer material originally developed under Furon, used for bearings and low-friction, wear-resistant components in demanding industrial and aerospace applications. Tell us your load and friction requirements and we'll help confirm the right Rulon grade.

What industries use Furon-lineage sealing products?

Furon-lineage sealing products, including Omniseal spring-energized seals, are used extensively in aerospace, industrial, and fluid handling applications where extreme temperature and pressure resistance matter. Tell us your industry and operating environment and we'll match the right seal.
