About Estwing Manufacturing

About Estwing Manufacturing

Estwing Manufacturing was founded in 1923 in Rockford, Illinois, by Swedish immigrant Ernest O. Estwing, who had emigrated to the United States at age 16 after being born on the island of Öland, Sweden in 1885. Motivated by the limitations he observed in wood-handled hammers and hatchets, Estwing set out to build a tool that eliminated the weak point where a wooden handle met the head.

The company's breakthrough was the one-piece forged design, in which the head and handle are forged from a single piece of solid steel rather than assembled from separate wood and metal parts. This construction became the defining feature of Estwing's tools and eliminated the loosening and breakage common to traditional hammers, establishing a design language the company has carried across its full product range.

Estwing's product line grew to include axes, pry bars, bricklayer's tools, roofer's tools, geologist's rock hammers, and a variety of specialty striking tools, all built around the same forged one-piece construction. The company has manufactured continuously in Rockford, Illinois for over a century, and in 2005 an Estwing hammer was added to the Smithsonian's Industry & Manufacturing collection at the National Museum of American History.
